Placentia-Whitbourne District RCMP arrested a 48-year-old man during a police operation at a home in Ferndale on Monday afternoon, after police received a report that he was uttering threats while in possession of a firearm. 

On June 22, Placentia RCMP were called to a home on Ferndale Road after receiving a report that a man inside the residence had pointed a firearm at and threatened two people outside.

Due to the presence of a weapon, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) was deployed to assist, and a public notice was issued asking residents to avoid the area. Police Dog Services (PDS) was also engaged to assist with the police operation.

With the assistance of a critical incident crisis negotiator, a 48-year-old Ferndale man surrendered peacefully and was taken into police custody without incident.

He was held in custody to appear in Harbour Grace Provincial Court today (Tuesday). He faces multiple charges including:

  • Assault with a weapon – three counts, 
  • Utter threats against a person – three counts,
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,
  • Pointing a firearm.

A 28-year-old woman was also located inside the home, contrary to her conditions of previous release. She was arrested and faces a charge of failing to comply with the conditions of an Undertaking.

The investigation is continuing with additional charges possible, but there is no concern for public safety at this time.
