Two people were returned safely to their community thanks to Hopedale Ground Search and Rescue volunteers, after the canoe they were in began taking on water Tuesday afternoon.
Just before 4:30 p.m. on June 16, police received an SOS message via a satellite GPS device, indicating that two boaters were in distress and requesting assistance near Hopedale. Officers engaged Hopedale Ground Search and Rescue and volunteers were able locate the pair, who had safely made it to shore. The boaters were in good health and were escorted back to community with their vessel.
Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) teams across the province go above and beyond to help those who find themselves in emergency situations and or in need of aid. RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador thanks all dedicated GSAR volunteers for your commitment to the safety of our communities, not only in this incident but year-round across the province.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of carrying a reliable communication device, such as a satellite GPS messenger or SPOT device, when travelling in remote, rural and backcountry areas where cell phone service may not be available. These boaters’ ability to send a message with their exact coordinates contributed to police and GSAR volunteers being able to locate them quickly and safely.
