On May 27, the RCMP West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST) began investigating a series of break and enters at rural properties that resulted in numerous firearms being stolen. The thefts largely occurred near Shoal Lake, in the Yellowhead region.
Over the next several days, officers investigated and began to identify suspects. On June 10, search warrants were executed at a home on the 200-block of McKenzie Street in Shoal Lake. Officers found and recovered several firearms, ammunitions, methamphetamine, cash, illegal cigarettes, illegal marijuana and other paraphernalia. Three people inside the residence – two males and one female – were arrested.
The RCMP West District CREST was assisted in the investigation and arrests by officers from the Yellowhead RCMP, Police Dog Services, the West District General Investigation Section and the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System team.
The two males have since been tied to a break and enter that occurred at a residential property on May 24 in the RM of Yellowhead. In that incident, RCMP attempted to pull over a truck near the incident scene, only for the truck to speed away. For public safety reasons, RCMP did not pursue. The truck matched the description of the truck later seen parked in front of the residence on McKenzie Street.
